Vienna Neighborhoods

June 2014

We walked through many neighborhoods, making particular note of the Riesenrad (ferris wheel) and the Prater from The Third Man. Our hotel was close by, in a location very convenient to the underground (U-Bahn) and trams. For a reasonable fee for the week, one can ride unlimitedly, getting around the city easily. Walking is also easy and there are bikes that can be used free for an hour at a time, or a small fee afterward. Bike and pedestrian lanes (largely separate from each other as well as from the cars) are well marked, though we were not brave enough to try the bikes. The city is flat, so the bikes zip around, making it imperative for pedestrians to remain alert. The worst place in town is the area around Stephensdom, the large cathedral and a crowded area with the most tourism. Pastries and coffee are excellent, as we expected, as are schnitzel and wurst, but we were also happy to find other types of ethnic foods at reasonable prices.
