Veliko Tarnovo

June 2014

Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of Bulgaria, is built on the hillside in the Stara Planina Mountains, above a sharp bend the Yantra River; the fortress is its main attraction (at least for Dan). Our hotel is on the hill, with the entry at street level and our room on level minus three with a terrific view. The parking garage is on level minus 2, entered through a garage door on the street; the box closes and the car elevator goes down. We walked through the old part of town and then up to the fortress. By then the weather had turned quite hot and humid; by evening it rained. We awoke to the river covered in fog, though within an hour, the fog dissipated.
