Ragusa

May 2016

We stopped for lunch and a short walk in Chiaramonte Gulfi, then drove on to Ragusa. When an earthquake destroyed much of their city in 1693, wealthy residents moved up the hill (Ragusa Superiore) while others remained on the lower level (Ragusa Ibla). We stayed in a lovely boutique hotel in the upper city and walked down for a tour of the lower portion, then walked back up after a lunch of bread and cheese. The last evening in Ragusa (we spent 3 nights there), we were treated to a Mother’s Day celebration beginning outside Cathedral San Giovanni Battista, at which many townspeople joined a procession through the upper town.
