Mozia (Motya)
Mozia (often spelled Motya or Mothya) is an island in a shallow lagoon, settled by Phoenicians, who built an underwater causeway on which they could travel back and forth to the mainland--a clever ploy used to evade enemies. Ruins are all around the island and a museum contains extensive and intricate artifacts, including a large marble youth. In the lagoon, salt is still extracted. Following our visit to the salt-processing windmill museum and the island, we went to the Pellegrino winery for a Marsala tasting.
