Budapest

June 2013

The Danube peaked at record-high levels while we were in Budapest, but did not keep us from visiting most of the city. All of Budapest’s bridges were bombed by the Nazis, but have been rebuilt, mostly in the original styles. The Elizabeth Bridge, rebuilt in 1961-1964 to a sleeker design, is the exception. Buildings bombed during World War II were sometimes replaced by Soviet-style block architecture and others were left to crumble. Construction, renovation, and repair continue. We stayed at the Gerlóczy Rooms de Lux, a convenient and delightful, small hotel built in 1891.
