Verona

We, along with about 20,000 others, attended Aida, the opera season’s last performance in the Roman Arena. The city, settled on both sides of the Adige River, also uses the ruins and reconstruction of a Roman theater for smaller performances. The fortress Castelvecchio, originally built in the 14th century, was heavily damaged by bombing by retreating Germans during World War II, but it was restored and reimagined by architect Carlo Scarpa between the 1950s and 1970s and is now a museum.
