Day 1: Site of the first Portuguese landing in Madeira in 1418 by João Gonçalves Zarco, Machico has a calm atmosphere, both on its small streets and plazas as well as at its wide beach, created with Moroccan sand. We stayed for two nights, during its annual Book Fair, with a special presentation by young students from The Conservatory - School of Arts. As well, we were in town for the Madeira portion of the Enduro World Series Mountain Biking Race, with the finish line in Machico.
