The Burren,

County Clare

The Burren, with its karst limestone landscape, was an inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In the early 1950s, when visiting County Clare and the Burren, Tolkien stayed at the Gregans Castle Hotel, our first accommodations with the Discovery Bicycle Tour group of 15 cyclists and two leaders. We enjoyed unusually warm and sunny Irish weather throughout our travels.
