Snaefellsnes-North

September 2016

We drove to the northern part of the peninsula and then westward though the relatively young (3,000-4,000 year-old) lava fields to the beautiful Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls with the backdrop of the glacier and other mountain formations. Driving on through a fishing village, we arrived at the Grundarfjörður Shark Museum, where the director, the descendent of Greenland shark fishermen, described shark fishing as well as the old and modern ways to ferment and dry the shark meat (we tasted a little bit of the fermented shark--not terrible, but not to be repeated). We drove to Stykkishólmur to take the ferry to the Westfjords. We returned to the town a couple of days later, though this time driving around the eastern portion of the Westfjords rather than taking the ferry.
