Hurtigruten Trip

September 2016

We chose to take a two-night Hurtigruten cruise from Bergen to Trondheim in order to see a little of the Norwegian coast and one of the large fjords. While we might someday like to see northern Norway, we are not fans of cruise ships. The Hurtigruten ships are not large, carrying about 200 passengers, yet travel is slow and tedious. We had an outside cabin situated right over the thrusters. Since these ships dock throughout the night in order to deliver mail and goods to small towns and villages, we had to endure the noise and vibrations of the thrusters at each port. Breakfasts were ample and there was space to walk around the decks, while watching the coastline. We made some daytime stops as well, so we were able to buy bread and cheese during a brief morning stop in Ålesund and then have a picnic in Urke, a town along the Hjørundfjorden. We walked around the village of Urke and a bit into the hills surrounding the town. The ship returned to Ålesund in the early evening for a longer stop. We ate a simple and pleasant dinner at Lyspunktet Café and also walked by the town’s Art Nouveau buildings constructed after a devastating fire in 1904 destroyed almost all of its wooden buildings.
