Savannah Area Forts

March-April 2014

Fort Pulaski: Located between Tybee Island and Savannah, the fort was built between 1829 and 1847, as a protection after the War of 1812. Taken over by the Confederates after secession, the fort endured heavy Federal bombardment causing a breach in a crucial wall, causing the subsequent surrender by the Confederates. A plaque notes the German Volunteers, among them, David Roos, Dan’s great-great-grandfather.

Fort McAllister: An earthwork was erected by the Confederate Army in 1861 to protect Savannah, the Ogeechee River, and the cotton and rice plantations along its banks. Federal troops overpowered the Confederates, ending Sherman’s “March to the Sea.”

Fort Frederica: On St. Simons Island, a settlement as well as a fortification, was established in 1736 by James Oglethorpe to protect Georgia from Spanish Florida.
