The Route to

Riquewihr

September 2017

From St. Hippolyte, we chose the low route, in order to attend the Medieval Fiddlers’ Festival in Ribeauvillé. We first walked through Bergheim, a village with its old walls still mostly intact. Continuing on from this quiet village, we arrived at a crowded affair with bands and costumes in Ribeauvillé. With more and more people arriving for the fair, we escaped the town, walking beneath a hill with three castles and then on to Hunawihr, a small village, and then on to Riquwihr, which was also crowded with tourists. By evening most had left and we could wander the town to admire its buildings. We stayed at the Hotel de la Couronne, constructed in 1550, though since updated. The stairwell was tiny and winding; we had to carry our bags up two flights to our large room overlooking the medieval streets. We had a delightful dinner at La Grappe d’Or.
