The Route to

Kaysersberg

September 2017

This was our last day on the walking part of the trip. We chose to take a taxi to Auberge Obshel and to walk the rest of the way, about 10 or 11 miles, through the forest and then through vineyards and the towns of Turckheim, Niedermorschwihr, Katzenthal, snd Ammerschwihr. We ended in Kaysersberg, birthplace of Albert Schwietzer (a small museum is in the home) and above the town is a castle with views of the town and countryside. We stayed at Hotel les Remparts. We chose to have dinner at a small bistro, ordered beer and tarte flambée. The beer came, but after half an hour the food had not. The waitress said that the kitchen was closed. We objected, saying that she’d taken the order and didn’t indicate that the place was no longer serving food. She demurred and had the kitchen next door prepare the tartes. Stewart had a more interesting experience: He used the public restroom at the town hall; when about to leave, he found the door had been locked. Checking other doors without success, he was resourceful enough to climb out through open window in the ladies’ room, which fortunately was on the ground floor!
