Wupatki National Monument

Eruptions in the San Francisco volcanic field (north of Flagstaff) around 1100 AD deposited rich soil for farming by ancestors of the Hopi, Zuni and Navajo. However, by 1250 the pueblos had been abandoned. Today two major sites form the Wupatki National Monument, with the Wukoki Pueblo several miles from the more extensive ruin at Wupatki.
