Arcosanti

About 65 miles north of Phoenix, Arcosanti sits on a sunny, windy hilltop. Originally an experiment in urban architecture, Arcosanti was conceived and designed by Paolo Soleri in 1970. Little has ben added to the original buildings and now only 75 people inhabit the place, though to work, Soleri had hoped for 5,000. The idea was to combine architecture with ecology (arcology) and provide a place for people to live and work. Our tour guide claimed that the project has never had enough money to achieve its goals. To us that seemed an excuse for lack of insight into what might make it work. Arcosanti still takes its energy from the grid, though it would seem that solar and wind power would be very effective at this location. The guide pled lack of funds. Now it seems more like a cult, with many of the residents participating in the design, fabrication, and sale of Soleri Windbells.
