Granada

Entering Granada was another driving adventure, with one-way streets and other roads labeled as only for taxis, buses, or those going to hotels. While we were going to a hotel, apparently we would only qualify for this privilege on certain streets near our hotel (Puerta de las Granadas). We drove in and around many parts of the city, including the Albayzin, across the river from the Alhambra and our hotel, finding nice views, though tempered by frustration.

The major tourist attraction of Granada is the Alhambra. We walked through the Albayzin for views across to the Alhambra and, from the Alhambra, views of the Albayzin, referred to as Granada’s “White Village.” We also visited the old Madrasa, now part of the University of Granada, and the cathedral.

We were in Spain during a holiday weekend--Columbus Day! Since it fell on a Sunday, many Spaniards had taken long weekends and, while there were tourists from around the world, there were also many Spanish families on holiday in Andalucía.
