Nevis, West Indies

February 2009

Nevis is the smaller of the two islands which comprise the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, a British Commonwealth nation in the eastern Caribbean. We flew from Newark to St. Maarten and then changed to a 17-seat De Havilland Otter to reach Nevis.  The island is quiet, with one main, very small town, Charlestown; few hotels; about 10,000 permanent residents; twice as many green monkeys (we saw only one, caged); one main road around the perimeter; some small roads which we explored; a dormant volcano in the center of the island; hiking trails within the rain forest; a medical school with U.S. accreditation. We stayed at the Oualie Beach Hotel, in a cottage right on the beach. We swam everyday, hiked most days, and read. It was a very relaxing 9 days!
